Prostate Cancer Is Selenium the Solution?

Prostate cancer is extremely common in men. It's even said that any man who lives long enough will eventually develop prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is a serious problem that deserves some attention. Men should have a regular prostate exam when they reach fifty just to be sure. Certain high-risk groups such as African Americans should have exams earlier, starting the age of forty. Because so many men have it, it's important to have some kind of preventive strategy.

But there is a way to actually lessen the risk of developing prostate cancer through various ways. Eating healthy is one. Avoid eating too much fatty foods and red meat. More vegetables, fruits and vegetable protein are preferred. Keeping in shape is another thing that men can do. This is essential, not only in preventing the dreaded disease, but in keeping the entire body healthy as well. Still another way to prevent prostate cancer is to take a lot of selenium.

Fighting Prostate Cancer With Selenium

A study that was federally-sponsored by a renowned urologist revealed some interesting facts. Men with inadequate levels of the element Selenium in the blood are about five times more prone to prostate cancer. Little is known about the element Selenium which is found in certain foods and mineral supplements.

It has been found that Selenium-rich foods including Brazil nuts and fish like tuna can reduce the likelihood of prostate cancer developing in men. The amount of Selenium found naturally in foods may not be enough sometimes. For this, men can take Selenium supplements. They are extremely helpful to old men because the Selenium levels in the blood are significantly lower at this point.

Unfortunately there is no solid data on how Selenium is increased in the blood by taking artificial supplements. Still, some health professionals are optimistic about the potential of Selenium as an ingredient in reducing the chances of men getting prostate cancer. More research is likely to be undertaken to prove the correlation between Selenium and prostate cancer. More rigorous studies are also needed to show the benefits of taking Selenium.

For the large part, medical researchers are positive about the future role of Selenium in prostate cancer. There are actually few known elements known to retard the progression of prostate cancer. The fact that Selenium is showing good signs of being a preventive agent is good news for hundreds and thousands of men.
